What is a migraine?
A migraine is a more powerful and painful headache-like condition affecting one side of the head. It is a common health condition that affects 1 in every 5 women and 1 in every 15 men. A migraine can last between 4 - 72 hours and can occur once year or every week.
The pain is normally moderate but can become severe if left untreated. More severe symptoms of a migraine can include feeling sick, nauseous and pain across the whole body.
A migraine can come in many different forms, these include:
migraine without aura – where the migraine happens without the specific warning signs and causes discomfort and pain almost instantly.
migraine with aura – where there are specific warning signs just before the migraine begins, such as seeing flashing lights or experiencing lightheadedness.
migraine aura without headache - where symptoms occur but a headache does not develop, also known as a silent headache or migraine.
Causes and triggers of migraine
Migraines have no clear triggers or causes. There is evidence to suggest that migraines can be caused by chemical imbalances but most people experience them during or after an increased amount of stress, both physical and emotional. Migraines may also be caused by tiredness, alcohol and caffeine consumption as well as loud sounds and bright, repetitive lights.
